MANGAS. Span. 'sleeve, frings of land'; also could be a transfer from Mangas, colo. Fray Angelico Chavez points out that Mangas is also used in a figurative sense for 'shreds' or 'sleeves' of rain pouring from clouds in a sky that is clear in other parts of the heavens. MANGAS. Community 28 MI W of Datil and 16 mi SE OF Quemado. This region is in the heart of the old country of the Apaches, one of whose chieftans was called Mangas Colorados, 'Red Sleeves,' but it is doubtful that the place names are Apache commemoratives.
