The turn of the century saw the establishment of Twining, a copper mining town that was initially financed by Albert C. Twining, a New Jersey banker. Mining operations were plagued with various problems from the beginning including the conviction of Twining for embezzling funds from the New Jersey bank He was sent to prison. William Fraser, who discovered the copper ore, then formed a partnership with a Jack Bidwell and a Clarence Probert of the Taos Bank and attempted to restore the mine to operating condition. Bidwell accused Fraser of stealing investment cash and during an ensuing argument, Bidwell shot and killed Fraser. After the mine closed, the cabins of Twining were moved to Taos. The mill burned in 1932 removing the last trace of Twining. The former site of Twining is now an active ski resort. Courtesy Henry Chenoweth.
