BIRCH

NAME: Birch
COUNTY: Eureka
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 1
CLIMATE: Hot summer, cool winter.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Anytime.
COMMENTS: Not worth the trip
REMAINS: A few buildings.

Stagecoach runs had to have stations, as would railroads in the years to come. One such station on the Elko-Eureka and Elko-Hamilton stage runs was Birch, named after James E. Birch, a pioneer stagecoach driver in northeastern and central Nevada. Birch lived on long past its usefulness for automobile travelers heading south. But once Interstate 80 was completed, there were paved roads going from Elko to Eureka and the unpaved road going past Birch received less and less traffic. Only some collapsed buildings mark the site today.
