COPPER CANYON

NAME: Copper Canyon
COUNTY: Lander
ROADS: 4WD
GRID: 1
CLIMATE: Hot summer, cool winter.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Anytime.
COMMENTS: Interesting country.
REMAINS: Current mining.

Initial discoveries in the Copper Canyon district took place during 1871. In the beginning, much of the ore was shipped to Swansea, Wales. Although the ore was valuable, shipping costs were such that it drove the company out of the district in the late 1870s. The Glasgow and Western Mining Company bought all the copper mines in 1897 and the district began to reach it’s peak. In 1916, the Copper Canyon Mining Company acquired most of the claims in the Copper Canyon and nearby Copper Basin districts. From 1916 to 1940, the company produced over $1.6 million. The company was also the sole operator in the district until 1957 when it ceased operations. The mines were idle until 1967, when the Duval Corporation began operations. Now know as the Battle Mountain Gold Company, the company is still very active in the district and has had impressive gold production.
