A permanent settlement in what later become Pershing County began in 1860 with the establishment of the Humboldt Mining District. It was in Humboldt Canyon where silver was discovered by Louis Barbeau and the town of Humboldt City was founded.Today about 15 crumbling adobe and stone ruins adorn the canyon.Humboldt City was at its peak in 1863 when some 200 houses, two hotels, two saloons and a blacksmith shop constituted a proud community. The population peaked at 500.The silver panic of 1865 all but closed the mines and strikes in neighboring canyons detracted from one of Nevada's earliest settlements.
