JACKSON MINING DISTRICT

NAME: Jackson Mining District
COUNTY: Nye
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 1
CLIMATE: Hot summer, cool winter.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Anytime.
COMMENTS: Not much left.
REMAINS: Mining remnants

The Jackson Mining District is located on the border that separates Nye County from Lander County. Although mines within the Jackson Mining District are in both counties, the major ones were in Nye County. The first discovery was made in 1864 and there was limited mining activity until 1942 when the area was abandoned for good. The quality of the gold and silver was never high enough to support more than a camp here and there wherever ore could be found. There was never a town but only mining camps at the various mine locations. The district was in an excellent location with an abundance of water and wood in the surrounding mountains. No buildings remain in the basin but evidence of activity is visible in the form of tailing piles and mill foundations.
