The Humboldt National Forest is home to what is left of a town called National. The town had a relatively short life but one that was as rowdy and boisterous as any. That area of the Humboldt was considered one of the richest of the rich. The main mine was one called the National which, over the period of its life, produced over $8,000,000. One of its major problems was the practice of "high grading." The mine was so rich and the practice so widespread, the population accepted it as "normal behavior." The town had its beginning in 1909 at the start of what was the period of 'automobile prospecting days." That the day of the burro was gone was evidenced by the names of two sites, Auto Hill and Radiator Hill. Submitted by Henry Chenoweth.
