WILHELM

NAME: Wilhelm
COUNTY: Erie
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 3
CLIMATE: Snow, moderate summer
BEST TIME TO VISIT: All year
COMMENTS: I grew up one mile from Wilhelm, and back then 1950 there was a postoffice/general store attached to the one remaining house. It was in the 1800's style, wood with the flat front, the house still stands but is in severe decline, the owners live elsewhere. Years ago the area was surrounded by dozens of very old homes including a cobblestone house. More recently Tops Markets purchased most of the land and tore down all but this one remaining house so they could build an immense warehouse across the street. The center of Wilhelm is at the corner of Genesee Rd. (Route 33) and Gunville Rd. There are still some very old homes about a mile east, including one of the oldest stone homes in Erie County which is now a museum.
REMAINS: One house, barn foundation
Wilhelm is a small hamlet on the Batavia road in the north part of the town. It contains a store, post office, and a Disciples church. http://history.rays-place.com/ny/lancaster-ny.htm Submitted by: Brian Fahey
