NAME: Ohltown COUNTY: Mahoning ROADS: 2WD GRID: 3 CLIMATE: Snow in winter; sunshine in the summer and fall BEST TIME TO VISIT: anytime |
COMMENTS:
A few residents live near the old town site, which is mostly underwater. REMAINS: Ohltown United Methodist Church and a few nearby homes. Ohltown Road, which runs south into Austintown is another reminder. |
Ohltown was named after an early settler of Trumbull County (Mahoning County had not yet been formed at the time of the town's founding), Michael Ohl in the 1830's. Coal was later discovered on Ohl's farmland and the valley's first coal mine was opened in nearby Mineral Ridge. Most of Ohltown was flooded in the 1920's to form the Meander Creek Reservoir, which provides water for the City of Youngstown. A friend once told me that some of the homes in the flooded area were moved elsewhere ahead of the reservoir's construction. Submitted by: Geoffrey Mears |
