Jacksonville is a monument to Oregon’s mining history. Gold was first discovered on Jackson Creek in 1851 followed by the influx of prospectors and miners. The town had its share of problems including a smallpox epidemic in 1868, a flood in 1869 and numerous fires, all of which did nothing to dim the enthusiasm of the settlers. The beginning of the Civil War caused dissention and divided the town but that too passed and the town returned to its peaceful existence. Jacksonville is not a true ghost town for it is now a tourist attraction. If in Oregon, stop by. You’ll enjoy Jacksonville.
