To see what was once an unbelievable feat of railroad engineering requires a hike over the abandoned roadbed. The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad began its narrow-gauge climb up the east side of Spearfish Canyon along Annie Creek. This piece of railroad was one of the most spectacular in the country. A hike along the old grade makes one wonder how they ever dared to take a train over it. The line washed out during the 1930s. Elmore, on SD 14A, is now a group of summer homes.
