COMMENTS:
Boston Terrace is located 95 miles west of ogden in the Newfoundland mtns. It can be reached fron the north by following the road south along the lake from Kelton or from Lakeside going north. REMAINS: The mines are still there along with some old machinery and the old stone house. |
Sometime in the 1860's, a group of Swedish miners dicovered silver, copper and lead. They worked the mine for a year and then abondoned the site after an agent stole all there money and fled utah. in the 1880's, it once again was settled and mined till it was abondoned in the early 1900's. Boston Terrace was re-discovered in the 1950's by George Thompson who mined the hills for a while. For now, all thats left is some tailings, an old air pump, the swedes stone cabin and the mines itself. To reach Boston Terrace, you go north from Lakeside or south from Kelton till you reach the Union Pacific rail line. Go west and turn south where the road crosses the track. Stay on the main road and head south west. You will go nearly 12 miles down the West side. The town turnoff is located at N 41.20.370 W 113.40.294 Go east from here up the mountain. This road can be tricky and requires 4WD. As the road climbs up, you will begin to see the tailings of the mines. The rock house is located at N 41.11.083 W 113.22.781 South about 100 yards are the mines. This area has no water and no way for any type of communications. If you go, go in a group and go prepared. It is extremely desolate out there and yet, you will find it quite beautiful. Submitted by: Ron Peterson |
