REMAINS: Small town
This was an 1880s lumber and iron mining town. In the mid 1880s, about 7000 folks lived here, and by the turn of the century most of the folks had left. Even so, during prohibition, the town had a number of "soft drink" parlors, and according to some sources, had 80 saloons in 1938. Life on the shady side of the law was king here. Today, the small town of 2000 folks is still alive, and its past is nearly forgotten. Submitted by: Cynthia Johnson
